This past quarter I have done a lot of work in Adobe Photoshop. To be specific, I have done a lot of layer masking in Adobe Photoshop. At the beginning of the year, I used the lasso tool in Adobe Photoshop to select the areas I wanted to mask. For those who don't know what the lassos tool is, the lasso is a tool in Photoshop that allows you to select areas of your image by tracing around them with your mouse. Now the lasso tool is great a tool to use for simple images, however, when images start to get more complex it can be hard to trace. Now when I say complex I mean the overall shape of the area you are trying to select. It is a lot easier to use the lasso tool to trace a circle than it is to trace a person. It is not impossible to trace more complex images, however, it takes a lot more time to trace. Anyways, the problem I was having with the lasso tool was I did not have enough time to trace the areas of my image I wanted to select. This is when I found a couple tools that helped me mask unwanted parts of my image faster than the lasso tool. The first tool I found was called the magnetic lasso. The magnetic lasso tool does the same thing as the lasso tool however, the magnetic lasso snaps to the line you are trying to trace, making it a lot easier to trace the area you are trying to select. The magnetic lasso does not give you a perfect outline of the area you are trying to trace, however, you can simply fix the outline by using the quick mask tool. The magnetic lasso is a great tool to use, however it does not work all the time. Sometimes the area you are trying to highlight is a similar color to the rest of the picture. In these cases, the magnetic lasso is not able to recognize the line you are trying to trace and it can really mess up the outline you are trying to make. Whenever this happens to me I switch to the next tool which is the polygonal lasso. Now the polygonal lasso tool is a little different than the magnetic lasso and regular lasso. The polygonal lasso tool allows you to trace the area you want to highlight, however you can only trace using straight lines. Now, most of the time the area I want to select does not have straight lines, which can cause problems. My solution to this is to use the quick mask tool and put the necessary curves in my outline. With all three lasso tools, I find masking to be quite simple and fast which comes in handy in a face-paced class.
