As I finish up the second quarter, I now reflect on the things I learned and the challenges I faced in Digital Design and Animation 2. During this reflection I will talk about what I learned and a project associated with the material. I will only be going over the last half of this quarter mainly because that is what is fresh on my mind.
First off we have the neighborhood project which was a project showing off the skill we previously learn. No new materials here, but if you want to take a look, go visit the selected works page. After this project, we began to work with parametric modeling. Parametric modeling refers to modeling that is done by changing the value of something. this means there will always be a number involved. An example would be changing the height of a box from 60cm to 50cm by typing 50cm in the height box. Parametric modeling occurs in the modify panel of 3ds max. the associated project with parametric modeling is the London bridge which can be found in selected works. Next up there is simulations. Now simulations are a bit hard to explain, so I just say this: simulations can be used to imitate real world processes in the model. Now there was a extra credit project for simulations that I did not do. I do plan to use a daylight simulation on my neighbor hood project, to give it the appearance of an actual sunny day in the neighborhood. The newest and last thing I will talk about is materials. I thought I new a lot about materials, but I have come to realize there is so much more. In the material word there is maps, textures, and shaders. Now this is only a brief explanation, so if your interested, I suggest you do research. So materials refer to the actual look of an object. Is it black or red? Brick or stone? Texture refers to how the model feels. Now you cant actually feel the model but it give an appearance of either smooth, rough, etc. Shaders refer to how the light shines on the materials, aka shiny or not. Again basic explanation but a good start. The associated project with materials was simple. Four boxes each showing different materials.(Also located in selected works.) I have a feeling we will be doing a large project on materials for third quarter but in until then, this is what I have learn so far.
